About Us
More than just gluten-free. Finding places that understand coeliac safety.
Our Story
Silly Yak Perth was born out of a personal experience that changed the way our family looked at eating out.
When our daughter was diagnosed with coeliac disease, we quickly discovered that finding somewhere to eat wasn't always as simple as finding a gluten-free menu.
For someone living with coeliac disease, it's not just about whether a meal contains gluten. Cross-contamination is a real concern, and understanding how food is prepared, handled and served can make all the difference.
We found it surprisingly difficult to identify places that took these extra precautions seriously. While Coeliac Australia provides a directory of verified venues, we discovered that the number of options available was limited. We also began hearing about other businesses through Facebook groups, Instagram and conversations within the coeliac community — places that were making an effort to minimise cross-contamination, even if they weren't formally accredited.
It got us thinking.
What if there was a place to discover these businesses and learn more about the practices they have in place to help keep people with coeliac disease safe?
And so, Silly Yak Perth was created.
Why We're Different
There are already plenty of gluten-free directories out there, but we wanted to do something a little different.
Our aim is to go beyond simply listing gluten-free options. We want to connect with businesses across Perth, ask them about their food preparation and handling practices, and share information about the steps they take to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
Whether it's a café, restaurant, takeaway shop or somewhere unexpected, we want to help people discover more places to consider when deciding where to eat.
Because everyone deserves to enjoy a meal out with greater confidence and a little less stress.
Transparency Matters
Silly Yak Perth is an independent directory, not an accreditation or certification body. We do not certify venues as coeliac-safe, and our listings should not be taken as a guarantee that cross-contamination cannot occur.
Instead, we contact businesses directly to ask about their practices and use the information they provide to help people make more informed decisions.
We also aim to review our listings regularly, so the information we share can be checked and updated regularly.
We recognise that every business operates differently, and practices can change. That's why we encourage people to speak directly with venues about their individual needs before ordering.
Our goal isn't to tell people where they can eat without risk. It's to make it easier to find businesses that are making an effort to understand and accommodate the needs of people with coeliac disease.
Built for the Coeliac Community
We know how much planning can go into something as simple as eating out when coeliac disease is part of your life.
The questions. The phone calls. The uncertainty. The frustration of wanting to enjoy a meal without having to worry about what might happen behind the scenes.
We started Silly Yak Perth because we've experienced these challenges ourselves, and we know other individuals and families are navigating them, too.
We want to make discovering places to eat a little easier, help shine a light on businesses that take coeliac concerns seriously, and build a useful resource for our local community.
Because eating out should be about enjoying good food and good company — not spending hours wondering where it's safe to go.
